The edge of thick commercial soda lime glass displays a beautiful range of greens, from light to dark and from green to deep turquoise. Placed together in layers, both vertically and horizontally, the effects from the glass edges can be stunning. Until recently, heavyweight glass could only be handcut into straight lines or soft curves but, with the advent of new cutting technologies, more complex shapes can be achieved. This, and the development of glass adhesives, has allowed Glasswork to develp their design concepts to include glass sculptures.
Where the design calls for embellishments, Glasswork will use additional techniques such as warm glass kilnwork, sandblasting, gilding, appliqued coloured glass fragments and glass painting.
Much of the manufacturing effort in sculpture is taken up with pattern making to ensure that outsourced pieces and Glasswork
generated pieces fit together. Glasswork uses both handrawn and computer generated methods to achieve the accuracy required.
The larger glass sculptures are inevitably heavy and such considerations as location, access and safety are most important. Glasswork is experienced in the dealing with these issues and will work with the client to ensure the successful and safe installation of the sculpture.
